Major Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, BB (Retd)

Mr. Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram was born in Lalmohan in the district of Bhola, Bangladesh on 29th October 1944. His father Dr. Azharudin Ahmad (96) is a Physician profession who later become a member of parliament in Pakistan. His mother Karimunnessa Begum was a housewife died at the age of eighty.

Hafiz grew up in Barisal, a quiet town in revering southern part of Bangladesh. As a student of Barisal zilla school he took keen interest in sports particularly football and cricket and always represented his class in school competition.

His skills as a striker soon become talk of the campus and he became a regular member of Dhaka University and Combined University team. He was awarded Dhaka University ‘Blue’ in 1963. He started his career in Dhaka Senior Division Service Club. In 1967 he joined the Premier Club of the country Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club and played for the team till retirement in 1978. During this period the earned many laurels for his team as a leading striker including three league, championship. In 1973 he scored a double Hat trick in the Dhaka Senior Division football league, the first ever by a player in Bangladesh. Only two players have achieved this feat in the country till to-date.

He was selected a member of Pakistan National Football Team in 1967 and was the lone Bengali who played in the Asian Cup and RCD Championship that year. Between 1964 to 1966 he took part in 100 meter and 200 meter sprint and won first place creating a new record in 200 meters in the then East Pakistan (Now Bangladesh) championship. He is a rare sportsman who earned top position in two discipline Football and Athletics in this country. After serving his club Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting as an official for two years, he joined Bangladesh Football Federation as the General Secretary in 1982. He was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 1982 and served the organization in various capacities till 1994. He was awarded the Distinguished Services Order by AFC in 1992 for his services towards promotion of the Game in Asia. He served as the chairman Discipline Committee AFC for four years. He became the President of Bangladesh Football Federation in 1986 and served the games in this capacity till 1989. He was decorated with the prestigious National Sports Award by the Government of Bangladesh in 1980.

He was elected a member of Appeal Committee and Discipline Committee of FIFA the World Soccer Body in 1990. In 1994 he officiated in the FIFA world cup in USA as a member of the Disciplinary Committee and earned admiration of the FIFA family by virtue of his sense of judgment and technical knowledge. In 2004 Hafiz was decorated with FIFA Centenary Merit Award for his outstanding service to the game.

Hafiz started his professional career as an Army Officer in 1966 and served in the army for about nine years. In 1971 as a Young Military Officer he revolted against Pakistan Military Junta at Jessore Cantonment and joined the nine month long liberation war for the Independence of Bangladesh. He took part in many battels daring operations and was wounded in the battle of Kamalpur on 31 July 71. For showing exemplary courage and leadership qualities he was decorated with the gallantry Award of ‘Bir Bikram’ by the government of Bangladesh immediately after Independence.

In 1986 he joined politics and was elected a member of parliament. He is very popular in his constituency and has been elected member of Parliament six times , a record being shared by only three other MPs in Bangladesh. He served as the minister in charge of commerce for a brief period in 1996. In 2001 he was appointed cabinet minister in charge of jute and later assigned charge of Water Resource Ministry and serving the country till to-date in this capacity.

Hafiz got married in 1972, his wife Dilara Hafiz is presently serving as Doctor General of Secondary and Higher Directorate, Ministry of Education, Bangladesh . They have two sons Shahrukh, Taharat and a daughter Shamama
